A resale marketplace connects sellers of pre-owned goods with buyers. The category has grown from niche to mainstream — and the U.S. secondhand market is projected to exceed $80 billion.
What makes this category compelling is also what makes it technically hard: the goods are non-standardized, the condition varies, and buyers have to trust the platform to mediate a transaction where they cannot inspect the item before purchase.

Condition grading
A resale platform without a clear, enforced condition grading system will generate disputes constantly. Designing a condition taxonomy and enforcing it through the seller listing flow — not just displaying it — is a product problem most founders do not fully appreciate until they are fielding complaints.
Authentication
Authentication applies primarily to high-value categories including luxury goods, sneakers, electronics, and watches. Building authentication into the transaction flow requires logic that pauses fulfillment while authentication happens, whether platform-facilitated or through a third-party service.
Return & dispute policy
Resale platforms have a higher dispute rate than new goods marketplaces by default. Your dispute resolution policy and tooling need to be designed before you launch, not invented in response to the first complaint.
How we think about this category.
We build resale marketplace listing flows with condition enforcement as a first principle. Sellers cannot publish a listing without completing the condition grading steps — not because we make it hard to list, but because accurate condition description is the foundation of trust on the platform.
We also push founders to decide early which categories require authentication and build that logic into the transaction flow from the start.
