Experience marketplaces have the most complex inventory in the category.
Tours, stays, activities, itineraries. We have built multi-day experience platforms with the calendar, pricing, and host-side tools they require.
Travel & Experiences
A travel and experiences marketplace connects travelers with hosts offering stays, tours, activities, and curated itineraries. The model spans everything from vacation rental platforms to adventure experiences to local tour guides.
What distinguishes this category is inventory that is simultaneously perishable, non-interchangeable, and subject to surge demand. That creates a set of technical challenges that are harder to get right than most other marketplace types.
Where most builds run into trouble.
Dynamic pricing
Dynamic pricing is often the first thing founders in this category want to solve, and frequently the wrong thing to prioritize first. Dynamic pricing only works when your base inventory and calendar management is reliable. If providers are manually managing their calendars, your availability data is wrong, and your pricing model will make wrong decisions on top of it.
Host-side tooling
Providers in this category — hosts, tour operators, experience guides — are often small operators without a technical background. The host dashboard has to be opinionated, simple, and handle calendar sync with external booking systems without creating double-bookings.
Multi-day inventory logic
A five-day hiking experience is not five single-day bookings. Your transaction engine needs to handle deposit-on-booking, balance-before-departure, and partial refund logic for a single booking unit that spans multiple calendar days.
How we think about this category.
We build travel and experience platforms with a host-first design philosophy. If the host cannot manage their inventory with confidence, the buyer experience will be unreliable no matter how good the front end looks.
We spend more time on the host dashboard than most founders expect. We design it before we design the discovery and search experience.
What we typically build on.
Sharetribe is a strong foundation for travel and experience platforms. For high-complexity inventory — including multi-day packages, group capacity management, and dynamic pricing models — we extend the core or build custom availability and pricing layers.
