Rental marketplaces have more states than founders expect.

Available, reserved, picked up, returned, under review, damaged, cleaned. We have built rental platforms that handle all of it cleanly.

How We Work
Overview

Rentals

A rental marketplace connects people who have things with people who need them temporarily. The model applies across vacation properties, equipment, vehicles, fashion, and tools.

The revenue model is strong. The build is harder than most people anticipate because a physical item moving between strangers creates a chain of states, responsibilities, and disputes that a simple booking flow cannot handle.

The Complexity

Where most builds run into trouble.

01

Inventory state management

Every item on a rental marketplace exists in one of several states at any moment: available, reserved, in use, under cleaning, under review, damaged. Your platform needs to track those states accurately and reflect them in real-time availability. This is more complex than a hotel booking because the items are not interchangeable and the handoff is not always clean.

02

Deposits & damage handling

Stripe's standard payment flow is not designed for pre-authorization holds and conditional releases. Getting deposit logic right — including holding on booking, releasing on clean return, and partial capture on damage — requires custom payment orchestration.

03

Trust around high-value items

A founder launching a peer-to-peer equipment rental marketplace without a clear damage liability and resolution process will face disputes they have no policy to resolve. The trust architecture, insurance requirements, and user verification needs must be designed before launch.

Our Approach

How we think about this category.

We build rental marketplaces with a damage-first mindset. That means the deposit logic, the damage reporting flow, and the dispute resolution policy are defined before we design the listing page.

We also push founders to decide early whether their marketplace handles high-value items. The trust architecture, insurance requirements, and user verification needs are fundamentally different from a low-value rental platform, and the product has to be designed accordingly.

Platform & Technology

What we typically build on.

Rental marketplaces are one of the strongest use cases for Sharetribe, which has native support for time-based transactions, availability calendars, and deposit logic. For high-complexity rentals — including fleets, multi-location inventory, and vehicle-grade deposit logic — we extend Sharetribe or build a custom solution.

Technology stack confirmed in discovery — before a line of code is written.
